6 Steps for the Perfect Reading Marathon

"I can't do a reading marathon alone"
... Yes, you can.

If you're the only reader in your friend group or family, it's time to bust that myth and host a solitary reading marathon! All you need is yourself. Consider this article a small warm up to your reading marathon. If you can read this article, you can not just do your marathon, but do it well.

1. Plan it!

This step is most forgotten, and most often the reason why reading marathons don't happen. If there is not a special set aside time devoted to this activity--as special as if you RSVP-ed Yes to a wedding--then it won't happen! Even if it does, instead of feeling like a marathon, it will just feel like just another ordinary day. That's not a marathon!

Go check your wall or phone calendar and pick an empty day (even if that day is today).

Good job. Next...

2. Set a timeframe

If you don't set a timeframe for how long your reading marathon is going to be, then honey, forget the whole thing! You'll be checking your phone/clock the whole time to see how long you've been reading and asking yourself "That's been long enough, right?" (and by extension cheat yourself out of a real marathon) or if you're an extremely avid reader, you'll realize ten hours have passed and it was "WAY too long!"

Choose a timeframe. Pick one from below:

• Struggle to read a page? Try 30 minutes!

• Struggle to read more than a chapter? Try 1 hour!

• Want to read more than a few chapters? Try 2-4 hours!

• Are you an avid reader who's looking for a heavy duty reading session? Try 10 hours!

It's personal. I can't decide the time for you. But, if you want me to, then I'll remove the pressure and tell you to read for 2 hours.

Set a timer. This is a MUST! A reading marathon is supposed to be anxiety-free where you can take a break from the incessant question in your mind of "What time is it?". It's a break from all the chores, social engagements and any external pressures. Do not try to do a reading marathon without a timer!

Side note: Don't be surprised if you feel like you've found the secret to gaining minutes and hours to your day... Reading for more extended periods has a way of slowing down time for the better.

3. Pick a book (Digital or Physical)

Pick a book you are currently reading OR something brand new. That's right, it doesn't have to be a book you're on right now. It can be something completely random.

This is your chance to make it feel like you're on vacation, travelling to somewhere new or just taking a break from your hectic life. Your novel of choice might be a quick and easy read that's been staring at you for weeks, months or even years! Or, it might be the thickest novel on your shelf that you're too scared to even touch since you set it there, back when you had the nerve and inner conviction to buy it (it's time to channel that inner conviction once more!)

NOTE: If your book is digital, make sure you turn off your notifications, even if that involves switching off your internet connections. In the very least, enable your "Do Not Disturb".

P.S. I'd be interested to know in the comments if you prefer digital or physical, and why. I'm always interested to hear different viewpoints... and may be doing a piece on this topic soon.

4. Pick a spot

Now that you have your timeframe and your book, pick a spot! The requirements for this spot are:

A spot where you know you will be comfy.

A place you can stay for the whole duration.

Somewhere quiet with no distractions.

This can be in your home, on your porch, in your backyard, at a friends house while they're away, or outside at a quiet park, in your car, or on a forest trail you haven't been to in a while (bring a camping chair... unless you know a good tree)

5. Prepare your favourite beverage

Bring your A-game to make this marathon enjoyable! Nothing makes a reading marathon easier than having your favourite side-kick of a drink beside you, be it coffee, tea or juice!

Iced coffee with cream, vanilla, maple syrup or caramel?

Hot coffee with cream, sugar, whipped foam on top and cinnamon?

Iced cherry chai tea after the glass has been frozen for that extra special cold effect?

Hot london fog, from earl grey tea bag, honey and steamed milk?

Hot chocolate with marshmallows?

You pick! Whether you make it yourself, or go out to pick it up, plan to have a reliably delicious drink at your side.

Pro tip: Don't drink something that will make you sleepy. This might mean refraining from alcohol, or sleep inducing herbal teas such as chamomile. That is... if you plan to get through the marathon and make that incredible dent in your novel I know you can!

6. Get over your fears

You might be thinking, "Did I read that right?" Yes... Get over your fears. What do fears have to do with a reading marathon? Let's be real.

A reading marathon can be intimidating at first glance - epecially if it's your first one! You might think "I'm not smart enough" or "I won't be able to do it!" Let's conquer those doubts. Do you really believe them, anyways?

Reading in general might feel difficult. Perhaps your current read is feeling too advanced. Your usual reading attempts might involve reading only one paragraph, when your goal was to read one page. This doesn't mean you don't 'qualify' for a reading marathon. If you're feeling motivated to read more, then a marathon is a fantastic way to accomplish that goal and get you kick-started into a new habit! We all know we aren't going to finish a book in due time, nor remember its contents if we only read one paragraph at a time.

"But... if I don't understand when I read small amounts... what will happen when I read for longer?"

Well, let me throw that back at you... "What will happen?" Picture this:

Your planned activity has arrived. Your timer is set. Your drink is in hand. You're in your cozy perfect nook with your book. Now, imagine you read one chapter to start. You find yourself not understanding some parts of what you read.

Does this mean you failed and no longer qualify for the reading marathon? That you're not that "type" of person? Well, let me ask you this:

What would happen if you re-read the part you didn't understand?

How about going back to the page you lost focus on?

What about reading the next chapter out-loud to help with comprehension?

What would happen if you looked up the chapter summary online to double check the details you're fuzzy on?

Lastly... what if understood the majority of what you read but not all of it, and chose to keep reading?

I'm sorry, but we're not being graded. No one is going to ask you to write an essay at the end demanding you to explain the authors symbolism, coloured use of hyperboles and ask you to describe the individual details of each side character's clothing, eye colour and personality.

Reading for fun is different than reading for a school project, which, for many of us, is where our reading journey began.

See, if you set the bar so low that nothing is challenging and stay within your comfort zone, then you simply... won't be challenged! In turn, this means you won't be able to grow.

I say, set the bar higher! Believe that you can do it. To be realistic, it's not like the author of the book you're reading 'didn't write the book for you'. They wrote it for anyone and everyone, and that includes you! The author isn't beyond being understood. Sure, they might use fancy words and longer sentences... but, that just means there's more food for our brain to chew on.

Just think... Trying to understand something that is hard and succeeding:

• Improves your deep focus.

• Makes new connections and pathways in your brain once things *click*.

• Similar to lifting weights, your brain gets a healthy mental workout.

• Your memory will improve because you're practicing holding more complex thoughts together.

• Your problem solving habits (you know... the quality we put on our resume?) will improve!

It's a win-win-win-win-win. You have nothing to lose. No one is watching you. There's not going to be any embarrassment. You succeed? You've won! You didn't finish? You tried! The only times in life when you have reason to be disappointed in yourself, are the times you didn't at least try.

Fun Summer Gift Ideas for Readers

Need quick but personal gift ideas on what to get that friend of yours who loves reading, flowers, nature and everything poetic? Read on.

1. Handmade Bookmarks

Inexpensive. Personal. Unique. Says "I care not only about you, but also your interests."

Just think... Every time they open their novel, they'll think of you ;)

Depending on your budget, you can pick one that's in their favourite colour. Or, buy a few (many readers often have more than one book on the go.)

Hand Illustrated & Stamped Bookmarks

2. Custom Book Club Mug

Okay, this one is a great way to go the extra mile without breaking the bank. If they don't already have a book club, casually ask your friend, "If you had a book club... what would you name it?" They'll never guess what you're about to do.

Being a good friend involves inspiring your friends to reach their goals. Reader's don't always get encouraged by their non-reader friends to pursue their hobby, so this would be a chance to against the grain and surprise them!

Make it a set by getting a matching customized bookmark!

3. Funny Mug

What goes hand in hand with a book lover? That's right, a mug lover. Every time they cozy up with their favourite book and take a sip, they'll think of you.

This mug has a humorous phrase in a lovely typewriter font "One more chapter...". We all know that when a reader says that... it means five more chapters. You know a gift is a win when it makes them laugh.

Stay tuned for more! It doesn't take much to make a book lover smile. Sometimes when their shelves are full of books already, it can be hard to know what to get them. This list will get you started!

Book Club Gift Ideas: The Perfect Personalized Mug for Readers

custom book club mug on a stack of books with plants

There are few things more exciting than sharing the experience of a great book with your friends.

The anticipation.
The “wait until you get to chapter 12” texts.
The cozy evenings gathered around coffee, tea and paper.

Book clubs aren’t just about reading — they’re about connection. They’re about stories becoming shared memories.

And if you’re anything like us, the ritual matters just as much as the book itself.

The Nostalgia of a Book Club Night

Picture this:

A stack of well-loved novels.
Soft candlelight flickering on the table.
Fresh eucalyptus scattered between notebooks.
Glasses set aside mid-discussion.
Laughter over plot twists.
Debates about character decisions.

And of course — a favourite mug in hand.

There’s something grounding about holding a warm drink while diving deep into a story with people who care about books as much as you do. It turns an ordinary weeknight into something memorable.

Why Book Club Traditions Matter

Over time, book clubs develop their own traditions:

  • A signature snack

  • A rotating host

  • A theme for each month

  • Matching bookmarks

  • Personalized book club mugs

Yes — mugs.

Because a book club mug isn’t just a cup. It becomes part of the ritual. It sits beside you during early morning reading sessions. It’s there during the late-night “just one more chapter.” It shows up in every meeting photo.

It becomes a symbol of your group.

The Perfect Book Lover Gift (That Feels Personal)

If you’re looking for:

  • A book club gift idea

  • A thoughtful gift for a reader

  • A cozy book lover mug

  • Or a unique way to celebrate your literary friend group

A personalized book club mug is one of those rare gifts that’s both practical and sentimental.

It says:
“This is our thing.”
“This is our club.”
“These are our stories.”

And it’s something they’ll actually use.

A Mug Made for Book Clubs

This hand-illustrated mug was designed with that exact feeling in mind — warm, bookish, and a little bit clever.

Featuring stacked books topped with a trailing plant (because let’s be honest, every book lover has at least one plant nearby), this design fits perfectly into a cozy reading aesthetic.

It’s ideal for:

  • Book club members

  • Librarians

  • Teachers

  • Avid readers

  • Literary best friends

  • Anyone building their dream reading nook

Whether you're hosting your monthly discussion or reading solo on a Sunday morning, it adds that subtle bookish charm to your space.

And yes — it looks especially good stacked on top of your current read.

Creating a Cozy Reading Aesthetic at Home

If you want to elevate your next book club gathering, try:

  • Soft neutral tones (think warm wood and cream)

  • Candles or soft lighting

  • Fresh greenery

  • Stacked hardcover books

  • Linen napkins

  • Matching mugs for the group

It doesn’t have to be elaborate. It just has to feel intentional.

Books deserve ambiance.

Celebrate the Stories You Share

At the end of the day, book clubs are about more than finishing a novel. They’re about shared laughter, thoughtful conversations, and creating space for creativity and connection.

And sometimes, it’s the smallest details — like a favorite mug — that make those moments feel special.

So here’s to plot twists.
Here’s to dog-eared pages.
Here’s to the friends who read alongside you.

And here’s to being a truly novel bunch.

Looking for the perfect book club mug?

If you’re building your book club tradition or searching for a meaningful gift for a book lover, you can find the this customizable book club mug in my Etsy shop.

Gift Ideas for My Partner

Don't know what to get your partner? Listen up!

A little background first, my husband and I have been married for almost two years, and our anniversary is coming up in February. So, love and gifts is on the brain for me, too. I believe love is something to be celebrated, and that every year - nowadays especially - is a milestone to be celebrated.

As the years pass with your mate, it can become both harder and easier to get them a gift. Easier, because you know them better every year, so you know what they would like. Harder, because you have to keep being creative and thinking of something new every time. There's only so many times you can get away with buying them a bouquet of flowers, box of chocolates or a pair of socks that say "I still love you"... it's 2026, time to turn a new leaf... Time to get something special for that "wow" moment.

Let's get brainstorming!

1. Find a Meaningful Gift

If you're giving them something they're going to see at Walmart the next time they're running errands, you might want to think again. Remember everyday life is hard, and you know better what your partner is going through than anyone else. So, give a gift that is unique. Something you can get that's either handmade or hand-drawn. There's nothing more special than something personalized. Is there something with their name on it you can get... or even better, a picture of the both of you? Etsy is a great place to start.

2. Include a Hand-Written Card

The first time my husband gave me a card when we were dating, it brought tears to my eyes. If it's hard for you to open up on an everyday basis, writing a letter to express your feelings will reach the deepest part of your partner's heart, and they'll never forget it.

"To Growing With You" Greeting Card

3. Make it Practical for Daily Use

No one wants to put so much of their time and resources into something that will be looked at one day, and thrown out the next.

Ask yourself "What does my partner do every morning or every evening?" We all know what habit stacking is. If you make this gift a part of something they do already, then it will remind them of your love not just on the holiday or anniversary, but every single morning thereafter. That's worth the investment.

So, do they have coffee or tea every morning? Come on, you know this. I'm willing to bet, the answer is a resounding "yes". You might even say, you don't recognize your mate before they have their favorite morning beverage! What about a mug? You might think getting them a mug is a little underwhelming or overdone. But, what about one with a custom hand illustrated portrait of you two on it? Bam, suddenly you've got a winner. Get yourself a matching set and you'll be the partner of the year.

It doesn't take much. Ask your mate to send you their favourite photo of you together. Then, order a mug with that design and after it's illustrated, it'll be shipped straight to the location of your choice.

4. Custom Hand-Illustrated Portrait Wall Decor

You know that empty space on the wall? It's waiting for something meaningful to occupy it. Turn your favourite photo into a timeless illustrated keepsake to decorate the home. It makes a great conversation piece, and again will be seen by your partner everyday. Sure to put a smile on their face... It will remind the two of you how lucky you are to have each other.

It's worth having a custom portrait done by hand... Let's be real and picture that moment where your partner asks "Who drew this?" and you try to choke out "I generated it with a robot"... Not so special. This portrait is hand-illustrated by myself. You can change the background to whatever colour you like and choose ivy as the plant or something else... maybe choose your spouse's favorite flower!

I know you'll find something special. If you or your partner loves books, reading, plants, libraries, nature, flowers... you'll want to check out my Etsy Shop.

Analog Lifestyle in 2026 - Is it Possible?

"Don't Read This Unless Your Name is Me" Journal

The question that is plaguing more and more people. Sure, the idea of being disconnected from the virtual conveyer belt world seems ideal. But, the more you try to slip away, the more you realize how intricately intertwined your life is in this oh-so digital universe that's been created and, it seems, embedded into the human experience.

Screen time restrictions started a long time ago. But, the built-in option of clicking "Ignore" staring you in the face, doesn't altogether inspire anyone to stick to their goal of limiting phone usage. And, let's face it, what phone company would want us to? Sometimes, if making incremental changes doesn't work, more drastic measures need to be taken.

Living in the moment has been replaced with living in our phones. Life is faster because we are filling the slow moments with short spits of dopamine bursts. It replaces time we'd use to improve our skills, to learn something new, or simply to sit there and think about ourselves and our lives. In many ways, then, it prevents personal progress. Without reflecting on one's character, how are we supposed to track progress and identify areas of improvement? Once you leave school, you don't have anyone tracking your behaviour or anything about you. It's all up to you.

No one is allowed to be bored anymore. I remember as a kid, one of my lines from time to time was "Mom, I'm bored." If you're a parent, I'm sure you know it well. This is actually a good sign. It means the brain is craving a challenge. Imagine if you filled that craving with mind-numbing, temporary stimulation, sitting them down with a tablet in any or all spare moments... Do we think they're going to tell us they're bored after that? Do we think they're going to grow up one day and suddenly not fill the silence with 24/7 noise?

Take, for example, the memory of my childhood mornings in the early 2000s. Wake up. Make my bed. Have my morning cereal and giggle with my sibling at the kitchen counter until breakfast is over and it's time to get changed, pack my school bag, and get on the bus. While waiting for the bus, I talk with my sibling about who knows what, but it's fun. Once on the bus, I pull out my MP3 player to listen to some tunes on the way as I look out the window. Yes, it would have been more "in the moment" even in this scene if I had no music. But, at least I was present by looking out the window. Compare this moment to a kid staring at an iPhone from the time they get on the bus to the time class starts... even past that. Anyways, back to the story. I start ravelling my earbuds up around the MP3 player when I see the school bus is close. Class starts, my eyes are on the teacher and ears on the lesson. Hands are writing the assignment on paper (with no auto-correct, to show the teacher where I'm really at in my education). The slow writing allows time for processing and planning. The absence of devices removes the possibility of cheating. Everyone's pretty stable with sitting through class... more so than when you get to high school (when phones were predominately circulating). I swear, a class full of primary graders with no phones, is more productive than a class full of high schoolers with phones.

Now take that day, but change the year to 2026. Wake up. Go on phone. Forget to make bed because they I'm sucked into another doom-scroll. You can see the bags on my eyes from the doom scroll I did just before bed. I scarf down breakfast while watching more content. I thereby ignore my sibling who's also on their phone. Parent packs my school bag because I'm distracted/busy. While I wait for the school bus, I'm on my phone. My siblings on theirs, but I don't notice. I scroll all the way from home to school. Couldn't really tell you who was sitting next to me. I struggle to put away my phone and so the teacher takes it away... All of this, affecting my ability to exercise self-control which will affect other areas of my life, into the future. Especially when life gets tough and the addiction then turns into a method of escape, rather than merely how I happen to occupy my time. And, suddenly, I've lost touch with myself and people around me, family, friends. Years later, I get married. I come to be more invested in the metal box with flashing lights than I am with my partner. The one I vowed to love that one day when my eyes weren't pulled into a screen. Coming home from work and reconnecting, gone. Going to bed with a conversation about the day, gone. Connection = gone.

This is not to say that technology is bad. But, if it is not in the right place and controlled in a healthy, beneficial manner, it'll make it so that one morning we see our youthful face in the mirror, only to take a second look and wonder how on earth we got those wrinkles so quickly.

We were not designed to be this accessible. This readily available to everyone all the time. Right now, when someone texts us, we feel we need to immediately respond. And, that if we don't, there better be an apology or reason. Even if we don't feel we need to give one, the other person wonders why you're not there... what's wrong... if you're mad at them, etc. Back it up... Used to have to send a hand-written letter. Personal. Something that took time to write, seal and mail. Something that you can hold in your hands, that you know came from that other person... something they held in their hands.

What about phone calls on your cell whether you're out or at home? Back it up... it used to be a landline with a voicemail... Back it up before the landline... you used to have to go over in person. And bam, we've identified the problem. Every movement of technological "progress" has basically been a "Remove-ment" from society itself. It's called "Social media" but really, the social part is often forgotten. I work hard to not think about numbers, and focus on the people on social media. Connect. That's why I've gotten into the theme of books. It is a passion of mine, and I feel more than ever that I'm having real conversations with real people. Technology makes it possible to meet and get to know these people no matter where they live in the world, which is amazing.

So, how much control technology has over your life, comes down to what you do with it. It's January 2026. A new year. Get a journal. Start reflecting and recording on paper this period of your life. You'll look back and see your handwriting the way it looks in 2026. You'll see the way you thought in 2026. The struggles you made it through in 2026.

Don't know where to start? Start with screen time. Sure, as aforementioned, it can still be tempting to go beyond your limit. But, write in your journal your new goal... your new boundary with technology, and go from there. I wish you the best. And, to help with your journey, I've made a custom journal for you. Add your name and the current year, add it to your cart, and wait for the package to be delivered. Yes, wait. Consider this your first step towards slowing life down. And, once it gets to you? Consider that the second step towards taking control of your life back.

Getting those Cozy Autumn Vibes

by Sarina Martina

Autumn is my favourite season... But, you have to do it right. It doesn't have to break the bank, either, to bring those cozy vibes in with you from outside.

I never knew such bright pop art could hold such warm mid-century vibes, until I started drawing again this year. I'm so happy to share this affordable art printable so you can put this stylish girl with her flower tiara up in your home, too.

Anyone else getting Anne of Green Gable vibes here? She may not be red headed, but she's full of whimsy and spunk! I've started offering several more sizes now so you can print it nearly any size, big or small. Anywhere from 4" x 6" all the way to 24" x 36"!

The quote "Flowers in my hair cuz I just don't care" was ultimately inspired by the free spirited Anne Shirley we've all come to love. Megan Follows, still my favourite Anne.

Go get your copy and get printing! These green and orange colours are waiting to brighten up your space and bring the fall weather inside.

Visit my Etsy Shop for other wall art printables. All created by me.
